Posted on the May 5th, 2021
The Health Service Executive’s (HSE) National Antimicrobial Resistance and Infection Control (AMRIC) team has worked in partnership with Aurion Learning to develop a new foundation eLearning programme on the topic of infection prevention and control (IPC) and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS).
Launched on the HSE’s eLearning and development portal, HSeLanD, the new eLearning programme has been designed to support health and social care staff– both clinical and non-clinical – in a variety of settings, to protect themselves, colleagues, and service users by promoting best practice in IPC and AMS.
The foundation eLearning programme contains a short introductory overview and seven modules. Modules include ‘Standard and Transmission-based Precautions’, ‘Aseptic Technique’ and ‘Antimicrobial Stewardship.’
Each module includes a range of interactivity and content types to engage learners, including video and animation, graphics, case studies, formative questions, assessments and ‘Extend My Learning’ pieces for those who wish to undertake further learning.

Commenting on the launch of the new IPC and AMR eLearning foundation programme, Josephine Galway, AMRIC Director of Nursing said:
“We are delighted to present this innovative IPC programme which will support staff across the healthcare service. Improving and strengthening IPC practice will help us to provide safe, quality care to the people we serve.”
Dr Maureen Murphy, Chief Learning Strategist at Aurion Learning said:
“We are delighted to be working again on the co-creation of learning resources for the vital area of Infection Prevention and Control and to be supporting the AMRIC team in ensuring that health and social care staff have access to the latest training and guidance to limit the risk of infection.”
She added:
“Working alongside subject matter experts from HSE clinical teams, our specialist healthcare learning team applied best practice adult learning design theories to transform source content into accessible, interactive, and practical eLearning resources that will enable staff to improve their knowledge and skills around Infection Prevention and apply the learning in their own roles.”
As the contracted learning partner of HSeLanD, Aurion Learning has been working in partnership with the HSE for the past 14 years to support the HSeLanD team. As well as delivering support to www.hseland.ie, Aurion Learning works collaboratively with HSE’s National Teams and Divisions to deliver a full range of eLearning services, including custom eLearning, capacity building and learning portals.
The HSE IPC and AMS eLearning programme is the latest training resource leveraging Aurion Learning’s experience in Infection Prevention and Control training having previously collaborated with NHS Education for Scotland to design and develop the Scottish Infection Prevention and Control Education Pathway (SIPCEP), a staged pathway of infection prevention and control education to all Scottish health and social care staff and Higher and Further Education Institutions.
The IPC and AMS eLearning programme is accredited. Each module will award 1 CEU from NMBI and 2 CPD credits from RCPI upon successful completion. Visit www.hseland.ie to access and complete the programme.
