Challenge
The Making Every Contact Count (MECC) is an evidence-based approach to improving people's health and wellbeing by helping them change their behaviour.
The Health Service Executive (HSE) Health Behaviour Change Workstream, Health and Wellbeing Clinical Programmes Team wanted to develop a National Health Behaviour Change training programme that would support the roll-out of their new MECC framework.
The HSE wanted a learning solution that would deliver a unique and engaging way to support and provide healthcare staff with differing knowledge levels of the topics at hand with the understanding and skills required to conduct brief interventions and support patients to make and maintain healthier lifestyle choices.
Solution
Aurion Learning wanted to make MECC come to life in a way that was engaging whilst empowering a diverse workforce.
Working with the HSE, and in consultation with healthcare professionals and patients, we designed and developed a blended learning training programme for Making Every Contact Count ensuring that staff have the required knowledge, skills, and attitudes to carry out behaviour change interventions with patients or service users.
The training programme consists of six, 30-minute eLearning modules and classroom training materials that introduce healthcare staff to behaviour change.
Applying a patient-centred approach, the elearning modules cover several lifestyle topics - smoking, alcohol and drugs, healthy eating and active living.
The modules incorporate a range of interactivity, including video scenarios using real-life settings, demonstrating the skills of how to carry out a brief intervention.
To support the brief intervention skills workshop, we created trainer materials and classroom resources.
We also provide and deliver ongoing support for an LMS on which to host the learning content.
Results
Since the launch of the HSE Making Every Contact Count training programme, over 10,000 HSE staff have completed the modules, with as many making steady and on-going progress as the programme continues to be rolled out nationally.
The training programme has been approved by a range of Healthcare Professional bodies for Continuous Professional Development.
