Epilepsy Ireland is the national patient organisation representing people with epilepsy and their families in Ireland. Their vision is to achieve a society where no person's life is limited by epilepsy. With over 45,000 people living with epilepsy in Ireland, their commitment is to offer high-quality resources to those living with epilepsy and those seeking to learn more about it.

The Challenge

Epilepsy Ireland provides training in Epilepsy Awareness to individuals who support people with epilepsy through their profession or in a community setting. Examples of people who attend this training are healthcare workers, education staff and bus escorts, employers and community workers in private and voluntary sectors and facilitators of extra-curricular activities.

To complement their existing resources and to help the wider public learn more about a condition that affects over 45,000 people in Ireland today, Epilepsy Ireland wanted to add new digital learning resources to their existing training initiatives.

Epilepsy Ireland wanted to provide self-service patient education resources and training materials in a format combining online resources with offline learning experiences that are accessible and engaging for users.

The Solution

To achieve this goal with scalability in mind, the ideal learning platform needed to be unique, catering to the dynamic needs of Epilepsy Ireland service users, staff and the wider public.

Given the distinctive nature of the training content, the platform needed to facilitate rapid and effortless curation of various media types, including versatile cross-platform resources and multimedia elements. Above all, it must ensure effortless accessibility and usability, perfectly aligned with the user's needs.

The ByteKast mobile learning platform from Aurion Learning fit the bill perfectly, allowing for a mobile approach to learning that incorporated a customised approach for different user bases, and a mixture of an Epilepsy Ireland branded app, learning pathways, videos, and training materials.

With this mobile learning platform, Epilepsy Ireland could provide its users with the ability to fit learning around their needs and access at a time that is convenient for them. Epilepsy Ireland collaborated with Aurion Learning to bring this vision to life and the EpiLearn app was born.

The new app, EpiLearn, delivers a range of interactive bite-sized learning resources to add an extra layer to Epilepsy Ireland’s information resources and to provide a digital, interactive resource for those seeking to learn more about epilepsy. The app covers a range of topics on Epilepsy, structured into pathways of learning, featuring videos, quizzes and practice exercises.
