About daa
daa (Dublin Airport Authority) is a state-owned global airport and travel retail group with businesses in 15 countries across the world. This includes operating Dublin and Cork airports in Ireland, managing international airport retailing through its subsidiary, Aer Rianta International (ARI) and an international aviation consultancy through daa International.
daa employs over 4,000 people directly, supporting a further 20,000+ workers across its airport campuses.
The Challenge
daa approached Aurion Learning with a clearly defined challenge: to explore ways to make their new mandatory sustainability training more engaging for airport staff. They wanted a fresh approach that would connect with learners, encourage reflection and promote long-term behavioural change, all while aligning with the realities of the busy airport environment.
The Solution
Working in partnership with daa, Aurion Learning developed a suite of custom digital learning modules, designed to support the organisation’s sustainability strategy and wider organisational initiatives.
The daa team were highly engaged throughout the development process, providing clear direction and openness to creative input, helping to ensure a collaborative approach from the outset.
Each module was carefully crafted to meet the specific needs of daa and its learners, blending creative storytelling, thematic design and accessible interactivity, helping to bring key topics to life in a way that felt relevant and engaging for airport staff.
The ‘Travelling Towards Sustainability’ module used a familiar airport theme and visual language, including a ‘departures board’ for navigation, custom iconography based on airport signage and light gamification elements where learners collect virtual passport stamps. The gamified passport approach not only rewards progress but also encourages learners to revisit missed content, helping to reinforce key concepts of sustainability. An animated, ‘storybook-style’ explainer video was also created to deliver a strong emotional and visual hook for learners. This alongside a strong illustrative design approach helped introduce topics such as Decarbonisation, Circularity, Healthy Local Environments and Everyone’s Job.
Each module built on the previous one and this approach continued with ‘No Time to Waste’, a follow-up module focused on the circular economy, giving learners the opportunity to explore daa’s current sustainability activities, its long-term goals and what circularity means in practice.
Building on the success of these modules, a third digital learning module was developed to support the rollout of daa’s ‘Just Culture’ policy, aimed at promoting a fair and open environment for reporting safety-related incidents. For this module, new interaction types and updated visuals were introduced, ensuring a fresh feel and maintaining consistency with the established visual identity. The module adopted the same creative approach, incorporating virtual coin collection and a broad range of accessible eLearning interactions, underpinned by an updated illustrative style.
Aurion Learning is now working alongside daa to develop a fourth themed module for ARI, daa’s retail arm, centred on Customer Value Proposition. This ongoing partnership with daa highlights the value of a consistent, creative and engaging learning journey.
Through thoughtful theming, light gamification and a strong visual identity, this partnership demonstrates how custom digital learning can drive both engagement and long-term learner understanding. Design choices such as airport-themed iconography, subtle soundscapes and visual progress cues, including colour-coded stamps and evolving graphics helped to ensure a cohesive learning journey that felt familiar, yet remained fresh across each module. The result is a series of visually engaging and accessible digital learning modules that reflect daa’s commitment to sustainability, safety and staff development.
The Results
Aurion Learning’s ongoing partnership with daa has resulted in a series of high-impact, visually engaging and accessible digital learning modules that have been well received across daa.
Highlights include:
Strong learner engagement: The sustainability modules developed for this programme sparked positive feedback from daa’s project teams and learners, leading to immediate follow-up projects.
To date, over 8,300 unique completions of the modules have been recorded, with 93% of learners successfully completing mandatory training. Also, 1 in 3 learners have gone on to complete other non-mandatory modules as a result of the training - a clear sign of how effective and engaging the approach has been.
Scalable success: What began as a single learning challenge has grown into a wider digital learning initiative supporting policy awareness, cultural change and strategic communication across daa and ARI.
The end product was great, and Aurion Learning were great to work with. The product itself has received very positive feedback from end users on overall engagement and ease of use. I would recommend Aurion Learning for the service offered and the output quality.
