Learning Design Lead

This is a key role in the design of creative digital learning solutions at Aurion Learning. The role requires you to work collaboratively with senior stakeholders in the client team to clearly define the learning content scope, write learning design specifications, contribute to standards and processes and oversee the development of deliverables until they have been signed off by all parties. In addition, you are also required to support Learning Design team members throughout the development process using a variety of means, including peer reviewing and coaching.

You will typically operate within a geographically diverse team and contribute to the development of the team, its culture and its working practices.

Essential Requirements

  • Minimum 5 years’ experience post qualification as a learning designer creating digital learning materials that are delivered over the web.
  • Third-level qualification in teaching, learning design or a related field.
  • Experience of facilitating client workshops to create a curriculum or content design and overall teaching model using multiple media.
  • Working knowledge of use of AI in learning.
  • Excellent presentation skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal English language skills.

Desirable Requirements

  • Public speaking experience.
  • AV production experience.

Line Management and Team Development

  • Report to the eLearning Manager.
  • Mentor and support other Learning Designers to aid team upskilling.
  • Support the onboarding of new outsourcing partners or freelance Learning Designers.

Design, Innovation and Continuous Improvement

  • Meet regularly with the eLearning Manager and the Lead Learning Developers to discuss recent project innovations and creative improvements and use of AI so that they can be integrated into new projects.
  • Support the eLearning Manager with research and development projects.

Learning Design Lead

  • Provide creative insight into proposals and tenders.
  • Actively contribute to overall continuous improvement within the team by supporting the development of ideas, concepts, templates, processes and tools within the team.
  • Act as a coach and mentor to other members of the team, including associates assigned to individual projects.
  • Publish articles and contribute to Aurion Learning events that focus on learning design.
  • Take responsibility for developing and maintaining the following items:

    • Learning design methodologies and specifications.
    • Standards, style guides and templates.
    • Best practice approaches to client working and team working.

In addition, you will be required to:

  • Design a learning design model/specification for selected strategic projects, and when needed, a learning strategy for projects.
  • Support other Learning Designers tasked with drafting project documentation in line with your learning design specification and/or content plan.
  • Input into the selection of software used to design and develop learning resources.
  • Support Learning Designers in making the most of software and other resources to design the best quality content possible.
  • Ensure that recurring design and quality issues are addressed early in a project.
  • Escalate risks and issues to the Learning Development Manager.

Learning Designer

Act as a Learning Designer for selected projects, which include the following list of key, but not exhaustive, set of activities:

  • Own the relationship with the client SME for the design of the learning resource(s).
  • Design content plans and storyboards within the agreed project templates, processes and standards that illustrate the structure and content components of the learning resource(s).
  • Liaise with the Learning Development team as required for the design of assets such as diagrams, illustrations, characters and source imagery for the project.
  • Work with AV specialists as required on the design and scripting of animations or videos.
  • Ensure that storyboards and all relevant assets are presented to the Learning Development team in a clear and unambiguous manner so that an alpha build can be developed.
  • Ensure that all client content feedback is dealt with in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Complete an on-screen review of the alpha build for accuracy.
  • Liaise with the Quality Assurance team and the SMEs to enable timely reviews of the alpha build.
  • Ensure that all client feedback is dealt with in an appropriate and timely manner.
  • Review the gold build following validated client feedback and review the build following internal review by the Quality Assurance team.
  • Report progress, achievements, risks, issues and changes to the Project Manager in a timely manner. This may be done verbally, in emails, using report templates or in meetings, on a regular or ad-hoc basis as required to meet the goals of the project.
  • Document and communicate lessons learnt and areas for continuous improvement emerging from the project to colleagues.
